Summary

Thirty five years had passed before theatre director Alfréd Radok added stand-alone film directing to his career. The expressive approach to this story about the World War II fate of the Jewish Kaufmann family is enriched by innovative methods combining acted as well as documentary scenes. The chief protagonist is a doctor, Hana (Blanka Waleská), who due to her origins is dismissed by her clinic after the Nazis seize power. As a Jew living in a mixed marriage with her colleague Bureš (Otomar Krejča), she does for a time escape deportation to the Terezín ghetto. But in the end, even the doctor has to face the same fate as her family... In 1949, this ground-breaking film – both notable for its form and the topics it addressed – received a very cool reception from the approval bureaus. It was for a short time played in cinemas outside of Prague, but eventually it was excluded from distribution altogether. In the end, Radok had to content himself with directing titles that were thematically clearly “innocent”.

Synopsis

After the separation of the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia, there are signs of agression towards the Jewish people beginning to appear in Czechoslovakia. The German occupation and the formation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia the drastic discriminatory sanctions deepen even further. Jews are deprived of all of their civil rights, and, moreover, forced to wear a sign of their Jewish origin on their clothes - the yellow star. The Kaufmann family, like other Jewish families, is living in permanent fear. Their daughter, Hana, who is a doctor, is fired from a Prague clinic. Her only comfort in the unhappy times is the love of doctor Antonín Bureš, whom she finally marries. One day, the Kaufmanns are taken to the Terezín ghetto. Hana can stay, as she is in a mixed marriage. Her and Antonín's life is marked by the anxiety for their dear ones and fear of further repression. The merciless Nazi machinery finally separates them. Antonín, after the death of his father and his brother in a concentration camp, is arrested, and Hana has to go to Terezín, from where her family had already been taken east, to meet their death. Hana lives through terrible days and weeks in Terezín. Finally she lives to see the freedom come, and together with her husband, who also survived, returns to a new life.

Note

This film was in the repertoir of cinemas in the suburbs of Prague and cinemas outside Prague. The Prague gala premiere was not allowed to take place.
